A pioneering project in the training of active professional basketball players
The professional future of basketball players is often a concern, especially as they reach a certain age. The possibility of working as a commentator in different media outlets is very appealing to many of them, and a real opportunity given the experience they have accumulated over the years. However, understanding how the media and journalism work from the inside, and having the necessary communication skills, are different matters.
The Basket Lab and the Spanish Players Association (ABP) have joined forces to create a unique educational program in Europe, designed to teach how to talk about basketball and provide ABP members with the essential tools of modern journalism — in a way that has never been done before. The core idea is how a player or coach should approach the role when offered this opportunity.
The workshop will run between the last week of May and the first week of July —exact dates will be set depending on participants’ availability and the game calendar. It will be held online due to the nature of the student profiles, although if there is enough interest, a face-to-face version will also be offered.
The course includes a total of 12 teaching hours, divided into five sessions and structured around three main learning blocks: an initial masterclass, two practical sessions with specific exercises, and two feedback sessions where students learn from both their own successes and mistakes, as well as those of their peers. The workshop will be conducted in Spanish. If there is enough interest for a second group in Catalan, it will also be organized. In the future, an English-language group may also be launched.
So far, the Narration Workshop has received support from Joventut Badalona and Uni Girona for the practical sessions, as well as the Eix de Negoci – El Centre in Santa Coloma de Farners (Girona) for the masterclasses and feedback sessions. A few days ago, The Basket Lab confirmed the support of AJUB, the Spanish Women’s Basketball Players Association, as part of the Laboratory’s strong commitment to inclusion. In this way, it will have the backing of the two main basketball players’ unions in Spain.
