‘The Basket Lab’ hosted the event at the Barcelona Centre for Digital Arts
The Government has launched the Women’s Sports Promotion Plan in Catalonia (PIEFC) 2024–2030, which aims to accelerate the achievement of real equality between men and women in physical activity and sport. The administration will allocate 23.53 billion euros to carry out cross-cutting actions in six different areas to help change governance models and the male-dominated culture of sports organizations.
The presentation event was held at the Barcelona Centre for Digital Arts, in a ceremony hosted by ‘The Basket Lab’ CEO, Marc Mundet, and attended by the Secretary General for Sport, Anna Caula; FC Barcelona’s Institutional Vice President, Elena Fort; the Director of Women’s Football at RCD Espanyol, Dolors Ribalta; the President of the Catalan Basketball Federation, Ferran Aril; as well as representatives from the main Sports Federations of Catalonia.
The event was attended by around 500 people
The main goal of the Plan is to promote a more equitable and inclusive sports system that boosts the participation, leadership, and visibility of women in the sector, while taking into account the social diversity of Catalonia. According to Anna Caula, “we want to do it with the support of the sector so that women’s sport becomes truly powerful. It’s in our hands to speed it up.”
The challenges of this project include transforming the governance of organizations, increasing women’s participation in leadership roles and sports professions, promoting visibility of women in the media, and preventing gender-based violence. As Anna Caula stated, “we need to transform, shake up, and innovate in women’s sport. It feels like it only arrived recently, and I challenge that—what is not named often seems not to exist.” Around 500 people attended the event, including representatives from all major Catalan media outlets and members of Catalan civil society.
